Convert your swamp cooler to run on solar power

It’s summer in America and I’ve heard its pretty hot this year; if you have a swamp cooler otherwise known as an evaporative cooler then you can try this handy guide to convert your swamp cooler to run on solar power.

This would be awesome if you loose power during the day; you will still be able to cool your house down.

This guide was found on eHow; its one of my favorite sites.

Instructions to convert your swamp cooler to solar power.

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Disconnect the swamp cooler from the main electric supply. Check the outside of the cooler for a label that tells the measurement of electrical current in amps that the unit uses. Calculate how much power the solar panels will need to provide to the cooler. Power in watts is given by multiplying the current in amps by the voltage in volts. For instance, if on the outside of the cooler the current is given as 1.4 amps, then multiply this number by the mains voltage of 115 volts. This gives the electrical power as 1.4 amps times 115 volts which is equal to 161 watts.

    • 2

Decide how you want to do the conversion. You have two choices. The first option is to replace the electrical motor that runs the fan or blower in the swamp cooler, together with the small water pump, with new units that run on direct current, or DC, electricity. This type of DC equipment is available for either 12-volt or 24-volt DC power. You will need to replace the motor and the water pump with a DC motor and pump, and connect the swamp cooler directly to a solar panel that generates enough power for the cooler. The second option is to convert the DC electricity from the solar panel to 115-volt AC by using an inverter. This way you don’t have to replace anything inside the swamp cooler. You just plug the cooler straight into the the inverter. Each option has advantages and disadvantages. In the first option, you essentially have to rebuild the cooler. In the second option, you have to buy and install additional equipment: a battery, a charge controller, and an inverter. This may work out to be more expensive, but technically it is the more efficient option. It also allows your cooler to work at night, which is not possible with a direct solar system………… please read the rest at eHow.

5 Reasons that torrents suck

Check out this post from Usenet VS Torrents website.

5 reasons why torrents suck & Usenet is awesome

Here is an exert.

1. Usenet is super fast

Have you seen the speed test I took comparing Usenet to Torrents in the ultimate battle?
Because Usenet downloads from multiple servers each with gigabit connections and downloading torrents rely on the upload speed of the computer users you are downloading from; the speed is Incredibly FAST; so fast that it maxes out your internet connection regardless if you have 1mbit or even 100Mbit connection.

2. Usenet is Secure and Torrents are not

Usenet offers a layer of security that torrents just don’t have; 256bit SSL encryption baby! the  MPAAA, RIAA & even your own ISP cannot see what you are downloading therefore no lawsuits UNLIKE with download…………………

Google search in chrome goes to google.com/blank.html

If you are using Chrome and because Chrome is the number one internet browser chance are that that is what you are using.

You will have found if you type your search term into the omnibox that instead of taking you to a lovely search page you are instead taken to http://www.google.com/blank.html and it’s a blank page you are staring at.

Currently Google is working on a fix for this but in the mean time to fix it yourself all you have to do is follow these simple steps.

Step 1.

Go to your settings menu.

Step 2.

Click on ‘Manage search engines’

Step 3.

Scroll to the bottom of ‘Other Search Engines’ and enter ‘Google-temp’ for the name, ‘google.com’ for keyword, and http://www.google.com/search?q=%s for the url

Step 4.

Find ‘Google-temp’ in the list of ‘other search engines’ and click on ‘make default’ and click ‘OK’

Congratulations instead of Google taking you to Blank.html it will take you to the proper search page.

You should always have a backup of your windows drivers just in case your computer crashes or you decide to format your hard drive and reinstall windows.

Watching Hulu outside of USA with Hide My Ass! VPN

Hulu is awesome but unfortunately not accessible outside of the USA but with a few tweaks you can access Hulu even if you live in Austrailia, New Zealand; Russia, the UK or any other country that is not the USA.

This guide applies to you if you visit Hulu.com and are faced with the following message when you go to play a video.

1. Visit Hide My Ass! and signup for a the Hide My Ass! VPN.
The reason  for Hide My Ass! is because it is one of the cheapest Virtual Private Networks available and it is very easy to set up.
You can use any VPN but Hide My Ass is the VPN I am using in this guide because I know it works with Hulu.
You should  check out the Hide My Ass reviews.

HMA holiday specials

2.  If you decided to signup for Hide My Ass! (there is a 30 day trial period; if you don’t like the service just let them know and they will refund your money.) then you will need to download the Hide My Ass! VPN Software.

3. Once Hide My Ass! is installed on your computer you can go ahead and open it.
You will need to use the drop down box (depicted below) to select the American city closest to you in order to achieve the fastest connection; then fill in you Hide My Ass! username and password; then click on ‘connect to VPN’

4. Once connected to the America VPN of your choice the  Hide My Ass! software should now be telling your original IP address and country and your new IP address and country.
Any website you visit will think you are coming from America even though you are stuck in New Zealand or Australia (or what ever other country you are from)

6. Once you are connected to Hide My Ass you can visit Hulu.com and watch all the TV shows you want.

Now that you have a VPN installed you can do tons of stuff you couldn’t do before like downloading torrents securely and listening to Spotify.

Listening to Spotify outside of America

I currently live in New Zealand which Spotify does not cater to but does this deter me from accessing the awesome array of music that Spotify has to offer? heck no and nor should it deter you.

Just follow this simple guide and you too can listen to Spotify 24/7 if you choose if you live outside of Spotify’s accessible countries; USA and most of Europe.

1. So right now if you were to go to Spotify you will get a screen similar to the screenshot below.

You can enter you email address if you like and Spotify will let you know when it is available in your country but I wouldnt hold your breath if I were you; it’s probably going to be a long wait before Spotify is availiable in places like Australia and New Zealand.

2. Sign up for a low cost VPN (Virtual Private network) I like Hide My Ass! because it is very low cost; very versatile; and so simple to use.
You can use any VPN to listen to Spotify outside of USA but I know that Hide My Ass works 100% with Spotify because that is the VPN I use every single day.
Hide My Ass link  you should also check out the Hide My Ass reviews.

Here is a list of other websites or applications what work with the Hide My Ass VPN installed.

6. Now that you are logged into an American VPN you can go back to Spotify’s website and join Spotify.

7. When you have joined Spotify; it is time to download the Spotify Application (if you have read our Ninite tutorial you can install Spotify as part of an automatic package)

8. Once Spotify has been installed please go ahead and open the Spotify Application (please make sure you are still connected to Hide My Ass!) login using your new Spotify credentials and start enjoying the music.

You can disconnect from Hide My Ass once you have Spotify up and running; you only need to login using Hide My Ass every 14 days because you can listen to Spotify Free overseas for 14 days but when that 14 day period is up all you need to do it log back into Hide My Ass! (which is essentially like coming back to America) log in to Spotify, disconnect from Hide My Ass and listen for another 14 days even if you reset your computer.
You can use Hide My Ass for a multitude of other awesome things which we will get into at another date but one thing you can do which you cannot do with out a VPN unless you live in America is watch Hulu; so have some fun with that.

My Spotify Testimonial.

Before I tried out Spotify for the first time 4 months ago; I thought that it would be just like every other streaming music service but once I tried it; WOW Spotify is Amazing.
There are so many songs available and they are all good quality; I am hooked; I have Spotify playing the background most of the day either on Spotify radio or a Spotify playlist that I created myself or one that I got for free from one of the many Spotify playlist websites.
It would be awesome if Spotify would work right out of the box in countries other than ones specified by Spotify but thankfully we have Hide  My Ass VPN to lead the way.
I love Spotify so much that the other month I deleted all 120GB of downloaded MP3’s that I have been collecting for over 10 years; now I’ve got more room on my Hard Drive for other things; Ive also deleted the majority of my TV shows since I can now access Hulu with Hide My ass therefore do not need to take up valuable hard drive space.
